Gary
SHEPHERD
Gary was born on September 14, 1948, in Boston, Massachusetts. He graduated high school in Berlin, Germany, where his parents Richard and Elaine Walker served as missionaries. He went on to study at Lubbock Christian College and Harding College, where he met Kathy Walton, whom he married in 1971. Gary also studied at Harding Graduate School of Religion, the University of Central Arkansas, and the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences in Bangalore, India. Before his association with Sunset began in 1973, he served two years as the director of the Church of Christ Student Center at Southern State University in
Magnolia, Arkansas.
The Walkers have three sons. Joel lives in College Station, Texas, with his wife Laura and their three children Isaac, Evelyn and Aaron. His family attends the A&M Church of Christ. He is a professor of Physics and the department chair at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. Ben, his wife Natalie and their daughters Aleah, Vivian and Tessa live in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he serves as a deacon at the Northside Church of Christ. He is a Licensed Professional Counselor and a real estate broker. Micah, his wife Maggie, and their children Adeline, Caleb and Nolan attend the Canyon Church of Christ in Phoenix, Arizona, where he serves as a deacon. He works for the federal government.
Gary and Kathy served as Sunset missionaries to Bangalore, India, from 1974 to 1984 and continue to make trips there for ongoing mentoring and teaching. From 1984 to 2000, he served on staff at Sunset in various ministry roles, i.e., family life/counselor, local minister, SSOP instructor, and adult education. He began a private practice in 1993 as a licensed clinical psychologist and became an elder at Sunset in 1997. Until recently, he taught courses at SIBI on Mental Health and Missions as well as Christian Counseling. His current special interests as an elder include mentoring future leaders for the Sunset congregation and serving as the chairman of the Sunset International Bible Institute Board of Directors.
